The Finish Line: Day #3 - There And Back Again.

After almost two months, I'm proud to say, Hello Texas! This trip has been an amazing experience for me. I've met so many people from around the world and biked with 23 other bicyclist during this trip. Joining with the Coast to Coast Team really made everything I accomplished possible. They took care of me and provided for me and I really appreciate everything they did for me! I flew out of San Francisco, at 5:15 to Las Vegas, where I found another plane to Houston, Texas at 8 p.m. I finally arrived in Houston, at 1 a.m. It's good to be home. I'm glad, and sad to say that this is the end of my journey of biking ocean to ocean. I really hope y'all enjoyed this blog and maybe one day be able to fulfill your dream, whatever it may be. Thank you for all your prayers and support through these past two months. It was tough, and there were days where I just wanted to give up, but I pushed on and accomplished a my dream. Something I will never forget. Remember, every great dream begins with a dreamer....That's you.

Who wants to walk across America with me?! Hehe. Justkidding. [Not yet] Well guys, I'm not good with goodbyes.....So. I'm outty.

The Finish Line: Day #2 - Touring.

Today was another busy day in San Francisco! Mrs. Swengel, Cameron and I went back to Fisherman's Wharf to take a bus a tour to see Muir Woods, and another city, Sausalito, California. Our bus driver was fantastic! He didn't only drive well but he knew his history and communicated it well.

The trees in Muir Woods are huge Coastal Red Wood trees. Some of which live to be 800 years old and grow over 250 feet tall.

We met some people from Carolina, on the tour and talked to them for a while too. After an amazing dinner provided by Adagio, [A hotel] we went to the top floor of a Marriott to see the lit up city. It was beautiful! We were only 39 stories up but could still see all the street and building lights perfectly.

San Francisco has been an amazing experience. One more day in San Francisco, then, TEXAS!

The Finish Line: Day #1 - Packing It Up.

Cameron and I woke up at 6 o'clock this morning to workout in the hotel's gym. We decided that waking up at 6 is a good habit to keep. After exercising, eating and showering we went to pack up our bikes and mail them back home. The bike shop that helped us out was more than generous and we were out if there in no time. After packing up all of our gear and shipping our bikes we went to walk around Fisherman's Wharf. It was a great day! We saw some more sea lions and ate at an In-n-Out.

Walking around San Francisco, people are always performing on the streets. There are jugglers, dancers, statutes, magicians and artists.

We are all enjoying San Francisco!

Day #52 - I Made It.

Well. Today was THE day. We woke up at 7 o'clock to bike only 85 miles into San Francisco. I crashed again. On the way to San Francisco, Cameron and I were biking pretty close to each other when he stopped. I didn't have enough time to slow down and biked right into his back tire. Thankfully no one was hurt, but the front tire on my bike was bent and a spoke broke. I didn't know what I should do. But. I finished out the last 60 miles of the day with a broken, bent, and flat front tire. Cameron's bike was a bit beat up too, both our bikes need a doctor. We finally made it to a ferry which took us into San Francisco.

It was pretty legit. The inside was built like an airplane, only a thousand times bigger, and had a back deck. I promise you, the ferry was going like 55 mph. We rode under a few bridges and by Alcatraz, which we will be visiting sometime tomorrow!

After the ride we finished the trip off by riding a last 6 miles to the Golden Gate Bridge. WE BIKED ACROSS AMERICA! I feel accomplished! I don't know what to think about it yet though. I'm just so excited about everything. We will be staying in San Francisco until the 31st. And. I don't care what anyone tells you. But. San Francisco is Cold!

I like it though. I'll continue to blog and post pictures until I make it home. I'd like to just say thank you to everyone who read, supported and prayed for me!

Facts about the trip:
1] I burned about 329,535 calories.
2] I biked 3967 miles.
3] I biked through 9 states.
4] I spent around 315 hours on my bike.
5] We survived the Loneliest Road in America.
6] I saw a Sea Lion in San Francisco.

Day #50 & #51 - California.

Day #50 - This morning we woke up early enough to avoid the wind. We met up with another biker, who's also supported but started in Florida and is heading to San Francisco. She's biking across America for her 50th birthday. Go figure!

We finally made it to California and were greeted with a mountain. This place is is beautiful. Biking to the peak of the mountain, a rude guy sped past us and hit an oncoming car. With a loud whack they hit each other's rear view mirrors. The guy who caused the wreck by passing us started yelling and cursing at us before calling us over. He asked for our ID's, licenses and insurance. [We didn't give him any] He was pretty angry with us but after a while he finally drove off. Meanwhile, another truck pulled up on the other side of the road with a flat tire. Cameron, Matt and I volunteered to help two lady's change their flat tire. Changing a car tire is a lot different from a bike tire....we are always practicing new skills.

It was our good turn for the day and they both warmly welcomed us to California. We biked a total of 105 miles to a resort half way up the mountain...... Without cell service, which is why this post is late.

Day #51 - Today we had to finish biking up the mountain before going down. We started at over 8,000 feet and are now staying in Sacramento, at see level. It is so much easier to breathe at this elevation.

This morning was freezing and there was snow where we were biking, but by noon the temperatures rose and became the opposite extreme. Hot. We biked a total of 132 miles today, leaving just 80 miles for tomorrow... Our last day! I don't know what I'm going to do everyday after this trip. I'm so used to biking all day and now I only have one more day. I'm excited to finish my trip :).

Day #48 & #49 - Wind. Wind. Go Away.

Day #48 - We biked with the, Bike The US For MS, group again today. We have had a great time biking together the past few days. Everyday around noon the winds grew fierce and most of the time it was at our side creating a side-wind. After a few hours it changed into a head-wind and finally, near the end of the trip, it switched into tail-winds, which we enjoyed the most. Nevada is almost like Kansas, you see the same thing all day long......nothing.

Cameron got a flat tire today. So. We fixed it. Then Cameron, Leland, Rachel and I biked a few miles down the road and found another biker with a flat. After they had fixed their tire we all biked the rest of the way together.

[In the back is Cameron, fixing his tire. Sitting down is Leland, supporting Cameron] We biked 70 miles today. Y'all may be wondering why the milage has dropped. It's because the distance between cities in Nevada is only so far, but tomorrow we will be biking 110 miles. We are staying in Austin, Nevada, where we are camping out tonight. It's supposed to drop down into the 40's tonight :). It'll be exciting. After dinner, while walking back to our tents, we saw rabbits in our campsite eating our trash. Texas has raccoons.......Nevada has Rabbits. I'm combining yesterday's blog with today's blog because I didn't have service last night.
[P.S. I made two posts last time. One labeled Day #47, and the other with a picture of a Pancake Sign... Some people thought it was confusing so I wanted to clarify]

Day #49 - We set off this morning at 7 a.m. to beat the wind. It didn't work. By 2 p.m. we were fighting strong headwinds, so strong it would push us backwards if we stopped peddling. On the bright side, we biked by a few Naval Bases today. Jets were flying in and out of the stations all day.... It was the coolest thing ever. Riding in a jet is definitely on my list of things to do before I die! :P We biked 111 miles today. Tomorrow Cameron and I are starting at 5:15 to avoid the wind, it was pretty miserable to bike through today and we'd rather wake up early than bike through it again. The rest of the group is leaving around the usual time and will meet us in California. We'll be entering California tomorrow! The last state before having biked the country :).

Day #47 - 5 More Days.

Today we didn't start biking until 8 a.m..... Which is really late compared to our usual time. We biked the whole way with two of the MS bikers, Leland and Rachel, who both race back home. And. Who are both from Pennsylvania, which is where Cameron, Matt, Stehl and Tyler are all from. [The guys i'm biking with] Cameron and I were pretty proud of ourselves for keeping up with them [Even though they could have gone faster]. Another biker, David, biked with us most of the day as well. For those of you who haven't figured it out yet, the group I joined up with is biking across America to fundraise money for MS. David, a biker of the other MS group, has MS himself and is still riding a bike. I really enjoyed talking to him. The wind was a lot better today than yesterday, we even had a little tail wind this evening. We biked 80 miles today and tomorrow is only going to be 70. Oh yeah, sad news.... I got my second flat today! It wasn't a big deal though, I fixed it and we were back on the road. We are staying in Eureka, Nevada, which is a pretty historical town. I don't know what happened here, it just looks historical.

Only 5 more days until the finish line..... I can't believe the trip is almost over, it feels like I just started it.

Day #46 - An Early Day Off Work.

Today was more of an easy/quiet day. We didn't bike an outrageous amount of milage and nothing exciting really happened. [Except for one thing. Cameron's tire got a flat within the first mile of taking off. After fixing that and continuing on, one of the other MS riders had a flat as well..... So we helped her out like any gentlemen would!] Biking in Nevada is not as thrilling as the other states we have been through. For example, the roads. Nevada's roads are long and straight going up one mountain, into a valley and then back up another mountain. You can see for miles and miles down the roads.......It's really annoying to be able to see where you'll be in 30 minutes. Other than that the biking has been fabulous! We biked with the other MS group all day and will be for the next few days. We made it to what is known as "The loneliest road" and will be biking it pretty much for the rest of the way. So far, there is still a lot of traffic but we know it will become "lonely". With only biking 60 miles today we finished around 2 o'clock leaving all day to chill. We swam, watched some tv, went to a bike shop and ate dinner with the MS group tonight. It is a lot of fun getting to know all of these people and exchanging stories. Tomorrow we are biking around 70 miles with the MS bikers to a town called Eureka.

Day #45 - Nevada.

We woke up this morning planning to bike only 116 miles. After knocking out 55 miles before 10 o'clock we decided to bike a total of 140 miles and catch up with the other MS group. Today's wildlife sitings include a Hawk, a Horned Lizard and a Golden Eagle.

It was the first time I have ever seen an Eagle in the wild. Cool beans! The weather is getting hotter as we move deeper into the desert. We made it into Nevada today.

Which means, we only have one more state to bike through afterwords :). We asked the locals if it becomes real desert further in West Nevada [as in nothing but sand] but he said it doesn't... To me, it looks like West Texas. We will be biking with the larger MS group or the next few days. Along with that, I met back up with some bicyclists I biked with in Kansas today. That is one of the coolest things about biking across the country, meeting up with other bikers over and over.

Day #44 - Zion National Park.

Today was awesome. We actually slept in until 7:45 this morning :). Mrs. Swengel drove Cameron, Matt and I to Zion National Park, and we spent the day hiking trails. A shuttle bus took us around the park and told us the history of the place.

We hiked up a river and spent a lot of the time swimming up stream and jumping off boulders. We hiked 4 miles up river with two other hikers we along the way, then turned back and headed down stream.

Today reached 102 degrees. Oh. Yeah. I learned a new word today, netsuke. I'm not exactly sure what it means but I do know it's pronounced net-ska. It's a miniature object worn on sashes, invented in the 17th century by the Japanese. Tomorrow we are biking 116 miles to the border of Nevada. After that only 7 days left on the road :).

Day #43 - Bike The US For MS.

We biked 65 miles today and met up with other bikers who are also biking across the US for MS. They started in Yorktown, Virginia, on June 1st and are planning on finishing in San Francisco, California, on July 31st. The group has 20 bicyclist and 4 team leaders, here is a pic of a few of them.

After biking with them we ate a spaghetti dinner with their group provided by the Lions Club. We met two bikers, Lee and Rachel, who were both from Pennsylvania.... Imagine that. We just had a lot of fun talking to them about the trip. It turned out to be a great evening. Hopefully in a few days we'll catch back up with them and visit some more.

Tomorrow's another rest day. We are going to visit Zion National Park and maybe tube down the river :).

Day #42 - Ladybugs.

We slept in later than usual because breakfast didn't start until 7:30. I think breakfast made me sick today. After we ate we set out biking and before long we were on hell's backbone, a mountain ridge.

Imagine a two lane Farm to Market road with a 1,000 foot drop off on either side.... That's what we biked for the first 10 miles today. It was a beautiful road to bike but all the traffic passing by made it a little scary. We ate lunch at a reservoir in Escalante, Utah, and swam in the water. It was a nice break, but by 2 we started biking again. Cameron and I saw a doe walk across the road with two little Bambies following her. It was the coolest thing! Then, while we were biking a ladybug flew into Cameron's ear.... I tried to lure it out by putting a flower by his ear but it didn't work. Finally, his mother showed up and sprayed some water in his ear..... The ladybug walked right out.... Mother's know everything :). We biked 90 miles today, up two mountains of over 7,000 feet. It was a long day and we biked a little further than planned, but that just means a shorter day tomorrow. We will be stopping in Cedar City, Utah, and be taking a rest day there. There is a nice state park in a near by city we will be visiting during our rest day to enjoy God's creation.

Day #41 - Up. Up. Up.

I was right. Today WAS tough... But. Rewarding! We biked a total of 85 miles, 65 of which were uphill. We biked 5,000 feet up in elevation burning over 8,000 calories.

Supposedly, Utah is the only state that still has a free roaming herd of Buffalo. We haven't seen any yet, but we have been biking through open ranges all day long and have seen plenty of cows in the road. I wanted to teach these city boys how to lasso a cow. :P We had two more flats before 9 this morning, after that everything went great.

The only wildlife we have seen other than cows have been lizards, chipmunks and a few dead elk. But. Before the end of the trip I want to see something like a bear or mountain lion :).

The rock formations here in Utah are unique from any other we have seen. Some look like mountains, others like piles of volcano dust and these look like the rock off of The Lion King.

Tonight we are staying in a really nice cabin in Boulder, Utah. There is a swamp like thing in the back yard.

11 more biking days to get to San Francisco!! I'm super excited. Tomorrow is another shorter day of around 90 miles, before long we will be in Nevada.

Day #40 - Utah.

Utah is beautiful! We woke up this morning at 6 and started biking around 7. I was expecting nothing but desert; flat lands. But. It's completely different.

We biked 105 miles through Utah today and we have seen rock formations the whole way.

I think that today has been one of the best bike days yet. Everything went according to plan and the rock formations just made it all worth it. The temperature was over 100 degrees today so we all wore plenty of sunscreen and drank tons of water. We biked over the Colorado River today and then saw air planes flying around in the canyons... It really looked like they were about to fly into the rocks. We haven't seen a single house out here all day. Here are a few of the guys biking, it was hot. You can't really see them but from the left: Tyler Gettel, Stehl Taylor, and Cameron Swengel. Matt Shenk is the 4th guy biking, but he isn't in this picture.

We are staying in Hanksville, Utah today and plan on making it to San Francisco in 12 days. :) 999 miles left to bike. Tomorrow we are biking around 85 miles, 60 of which are uphill... It's going to be a tough day.

Day #39 - KO.

Today was an exciting day! We started biking around 7 a.m. and just 25 miles into the day we made it to Utah.

Utah's winds are horrible. To avoid them we are going to start biking even earlier than normal, take a long break, and then bike again in the evening. We tested this out today, and have come to the conclusion that it's a good idea. Don't worry, everyone bought bright bike lights and it's safe because the roads we are biking on are lightly traveled. There were 5 flats today, everyone got at least one except for me and Stehl. And. This morning, right when we were entering Utah, I crashed. It wasn't a serious crash though, just scrapes and bruises everywhere. What happened was Cameron had gotten a flat so I looked down at my tires to check if I had one too, meanwhile, he stopped to fix his tire and I biked straight into him. Cameron is okay though. We biked 90 miles today, 20 of which were in the evening. The views here in Utah are remarkable! I didn't have my camera for the last 20 miles, but I'll do my best to take pictures of everything tomorrow. This place looks like it is where The Planet Apes was filmed.

Day #38 - Saying Goodbye To The Rockies.

We woke up around the usual time today. Ate a quick breakfast and got on the road. We biked 97 miles today and are staying in Delores, Colorado. We are done biking through the CO Rockies...

It's sad because of all the amazing mountains are gone. But. It rains almost everyday in the mountains... Which will be nice to get away from. Tomorrow we will be entering Utah! :) Getting closer! Today's ride was very enjoyable and the weather was great. The next few days should be pretty flat in Utah. But. After that, all the way through Nevada we will be biking through mountains.
This trip has been one of the most amazing trips ever. But. I can't wait to be home again :). I miss all my friends and family. Although, I've met some pretty amazing guys on this trip. I love biking with these guys. They're hilarious.

Day #37 - Rest Day.

Today was our rest day. A day to relax and not worry about having to bike 100 miles. But. Cameron and I decided to downhill bike ride on the ski slopes.

It was the most fun thing ever! We biked from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. We'd ride a free gondola up the mountain then bike down big slopes and jumps. I actually did a front flip off of one of the jumps :). It was an accident, I didn't mean to....but I felt like a man when I landed the flip on two tires. We've been staying in Telluride, CO. This place is like paradise! Tom Cruise owns a house here......and we talked to the locals, they actually know him. After all that biking we went to a free concert and ate dinner. Everything about this place is awesome, except how expensive it is. Tomorrow we are biking again, 75 miles. We will be leaving Colorado in two days. Two more weeks!

Day #36 - Yeah. We Were Pulled Over On Bikes.

Today was an amazing day. So many awesome things happened. First of all, we reached speeds above 50 mph. Then, on the way down the mountain, we got pulled over by a cop........for "challenging vehicles".

We didn't mean to, but it was real funny to be pulled over. He just let us go by saying "bike safely". [It was the highlight of the week] I got my first flat tire today... Over half way without a flat is pretty awesome! Out of all us bikers we had a total of 3 flats today. Finally, we arrived to Telluride, Colorado after biking 80 miles. It's more of an expensive town to visit, but so far it's been real enjoyable.

The weather is a bit cool because of all the rain today, but we found a hot tub to relax in. We are taking a day off here in Telluride to catch up on sleep and enjoy the mountains. Tomorrow morning we are going to down hill mountain bike the ski slopes :). [No snow of course] It's going to be AMAZING.

Day #35 - The Highest Peak Of The Trip.

We woke up to another amazing breakfast this morning. After much talk and visiting we set out on our way. We biked up Monarch Pass, an elevation of over 11,000 feet. [This picture was taken at the place we stayed last night. You could kind of see the mountains in the background]

We were on the top of the mountain in time for lunch. While resting on top of the mountain we noticed a storm was coming our way and we didn't want to be caught in the rain so we were in a hurry to ride down the mountain. It seems like everyday around 2 o'clock it starts to get cloudy and rain here in the Rockies. The roads today were particularly good. We had shoulders, there were nice people towards bikers, and plenty of down hill. I reached speeds of 40 mph :). After biking down the mountain it eventually rained on us, but we continued through it.....this time Prepared. We biked another 100 mile day. I still haven't had any flats, but Cameron [One of my
Biking buds] popped a tire today. We got it changed and were able to finish the ride. Tomorrow we are biking another 90 miles before taking a whole day off in Telluride, CO. Ever since I've gotten into the mountains I've been seeing a lot of wildlife. Today I've seen three hawks, dozens of deer, a porcupine and yesterday the team saw a pack of mountain goats run across the road in front of us. Everyday is a new challenge and we see new things, I love biking in the Rockies.

I know this blog post is coming in a little late compared to most, that's because I actually fell asleep typing it. Right now it is 4:30 in the morning and I'm trying to make sense of what I'm typing. ;) So. Yes, it's a little more tiring biking through the mountains but we're still making it....and having fun.

The worst part about the Rockies is the altitude we're having to bike. Today we went up past 11,000 feet and it almost becomes hard to breathe at first, but we are definitely getting more used to it.

Day #34 - The Mountains.

We woke up to an amazing breakfast provided by the Bed and Breakfast this morning.

After eating we went on our way, which was around 7 a.m. Today was a Long. Exciting. Wet. Cold. Tough. Fun. Tiring. Challenging. and all around Awesome day, a total of 103 miles. After biking just 20 miles we started our trek up the mountain. It was a good 20 mile climb up 4,000 feet. It took us about 2 hours to reach the top. It was a challenging climb, but when we finally made it we all took a lunch break before the decent. Other than all the wind blowing in our faces on the way down, it was pretty exciting. We reached a maximum of 40 mph today. After biking back down the mountain we could see storms forming in the distance and heading our way.

[I love biking with these guys, it's the funniest thing to hear Stehl and Tyler freak out about storms] Cameron and I decided to continue on and out bike the storm....... It didn't work. It caught up to us about 20 miles away from our destination. I'm not quite sure why but we decided it would be fun to bike through the rain and do it without any rain gear. So that's what we did. It was actually pretty awesome at first, but when it finally quite raining it got cold. It was so cold that we biked through snow afterwords at just 7,000 feet. After biking through rain and snow then finishing the last 17 miles soaked in just our regular bike gear, I think we've earned some extra man points. Right?. :P Tonight we are staying at another bed and breakfast and these people have been really nice. They made us supper, which included salad, lasagna, garlic bread, chips and salsa. and, of course, ice cream. It was delicious! Tomorrow morning they're making us breakfast then we're biking about a 90 mile day through the highest part on the whole trip.

Day #33 - The Great Divorce.

Last night we stayed in a motel where we had the whole upstairs to ourselves. It was like a whole house. We had fun in that. We biked 50 miles into Pueblo, Colorado today. It's the last city before we go into the mountains so we decided it would be a good place to get our bikes checked one last time. We passed a bunch of trains today, and that's about all that happened all day. We ate a nice lunch and basically just chilled all day. Two days ago I met up with a supported bike group going to San Francisco. It's a group of four guys my age and they're biking across America for MS. As many of you know my original plan was to bike to California, so I took the liberty and invited myself to follow this group. :P Everything is working out great and I love biking with a group of guys my age. Sad part is, Dave and I split ways again. He's continuing on to Oregon. Tomorrow's plan is to bike 100 miles and go a total of 4,000 feet up in elevation. There are going to be a lot of exciting things happen on this trip the next few days. I'll keep y'all posted :).

Day #32 - A Walk In The Park.

We slept in again this morning, waking up around 8. We chilled with the two bikers from England for a while before taking off. It's almost like the best part of this trip is meeting all sorts of cool people.

The first 30 miles turned out to be a pleasant ride, and we met another biker along the way. We settled down for an early lunch in Eads, Colorado. While we were ordering another group of bikers walked in and joined us. They're a group of four boys and two adults, who make up the support car. The guys are all around my age and are biking to San Francisco, California. It was really fun to eat lunch and talk to them. They average around 120 miles a day.. Dang. After lunch we stopped by the library real fast to check a route to Denver. I was thinking about detouring there to see family, but it doesn't look like I'm going to make it. Then we headed to Ordway, where we are staying tonight. A total of 100 miles today and along the way I saw some pretty awesome wildlife. This morning I saw a Hawk swoop down and pick a field mouse up in it's claws to eat. Then, of course, we saw some deer. I saw a jack rabbit, and finally some antelope. Seeing all these animals was pretty awesome. We are about 100 miles away from the Rocky Mountains and can already see them from afar. Tomorrow's plan is to bike into Pueblo, Colorado and get our bikes tuned up. We will spend a day there and be ready to take off for the Rocky's the next morning.

Day # 31 - Goodbye Kansas, Hello Colorado.

It rained all night, but we slept under a pavilion so we kept dry. We got up around 7 this morning and headed out as soon as possible. I forgot to mention yesterday that I got a flat. It was a slow leak so after biking into town we repaired it with a patch. It held air all day. We stopped for an early lunch in Scott City and chilled at the library for Dave to catch up on some blogging. We were back on the road at 2 o'clock. We met some bicyclists heading east today.

They said that they bike sections of America every year and next year are planning to finish the complete trip. Today's road was flat and there was nothing to see in any direction. Until we came upon this cow farm...........it stunk.

After all of that we finally made it Colorado!

Tonight we are staying at Sheridan Lake, Colorado. We biked a total of 107 miles today. We also met some bikers from England, heading east who are staying here too.
