Day #24 - Rehearsal.

Today was a great day :). Me, my Aunts, Uncle and Dad all went to Pikes Peak today an enjoyed the view.

We were at 14,110 feet in elevation. The tempature dropped drastically and the weather became very windy. But. We managed to stay on the mountain.

We got back to Denver in time for the wedding rehearsal, then everyone went to eat pizza. Tonight is the bachelor's party, so that's going to be really fun. I'll make sure to take some pictures of the wedding tomorrow to post for everyone to see.

Day #23 - First Break Day.

I had a pretty full day today. Woke up around 5 o'clock to start driving toward Colorado at 5:30. I'm really glad to be with my family again! We made it to Denver, Colorado around 3 o'clock.... P.S. I slept the entire way. When we arrived I met the rest of Maresa's family :). I spent time with her family, meeting her awesome siblings. Then spent time with my dad's family, who flew in for the wedding. My big family went to Casa Bonita, to eat. This restaurant is known for it's entertainment and it's true, the entertainment is pretty cool.

The place was packed and we waited about 30 minutes to be seated, but when we finally sat down the show started. It's a fun place to visit, but the food isn't the best. Having a day off of biking is refreshing, but my body feels sore now that I'm not using it. Tomorrow I'm going to check out Pikes Peak and enjoy the morning with my extended family. Then tomorrow evening we have a wedding rehearsal.

Day #22 - Biking in Kansas.

Slept in a little this morning waking up at 6:30. We took our time going to eat at a local cafe and by 8 o'clock I was biking away. Biking in Kansas is a lot different than through the mountains in other states. I kept a steady pace, biking one mile every three minutes. If you do the math that's 20 mph. [Mrs. Craig, I may not be the best in english, but I know my math. :)] I biked 80 miles today and am looking forward to the days off in Colorado. I'm super excited for my brother and Maresa!! Tomorrow we are driving to meet up with my family. Then, Mr. G is going to meet with his family. This marks my half-way point across America, both in distance and time. It is quite sad that Mr. G is leaving. After the wedding I'll be meeting up with Dave, another biker I met on the trail. He and I are going to finish the trip excited together.

Mr. G - Today I visited Ft Scott National Historical Site.

This park was way different than the other parks I visited. It was much larger and had over a dozen buildings that were in good shape with museum quality displays in each one. Since I had a lot of time, I spent the whole morning there. After meeting Stephen for a late lunch, he biked for only a few more hours and we stopped early, 4:15. We ended up at a state park in Toronto, Kansas, with a lake to swim in and showers.

We even cooked our dehydrated meals and had time to play frisbee in the lake and play cards. I know I didn't finish the trip like I had dreamed of, but I feel good about what I did and am ready to see my family. I hope Stephen is able to complete the trip. I have really enjoyed traveling with him.

Day #21 - Everyday's an Adventure.

This morning I woke up to an amazing breakfast provided by our hosts. We drove back to where I finished yesterday and I was biking by 7. It was cloudy and threatened to rain on me all morning but never did. I thought today was a very productive day. First of all, I saved a turtle that was on the side of the road. His name is Flash.

He doesn't like strangers. Then, I got stung by a wasp..... Which hurt. Mr. G and I went and watched a movie, Super 8. Oh yeah... I biked 120 MILES! :) Longest day yet. Finally, I got hit by a car. It was this morning. I was biking up a hill and suddenly felt a pain in the back of my leg. The car had hit me in the back of the leg with the rearview mirror. My leg got bruised pretty bad but I was able to continue my ride. You should see the car, I broke the mirror clean off of it. The driver did stop and apologize and we kinda laughed about it [I didn't want to make him feel any worse then he already did]. All in all, today was a good day! After biking 4 days through Missouri, I've finally made it to Kansas. I'm almost half way across the country. Still, everyday we see two things.

Crops.

Cattle.

Tomorrow is my last day of biking before I meet up with my family for my brother's wedding. I'll continue to post daily and let y'all know how the wedding is :).

Mr. G - Today was another day for learning about the area. In the morning I went to the original Bass Pro Shop in Springfield, Missouri. It was huge. They had a stuffed gar that was eight feet long, a record. The sign said it was caught in the Trinity River, Trinity, Texas.

They had a lot of aquariums with many kinds of native fish. After meeting Stephen for lunch, I visited three mire state parks. One was the home of Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone a famous adventurer himself.

Then I visited the birthplace of Harry S Truman. Both places were closed but someone came out and gave me a tour anyway. Finally I went to Prairie State Park and hiked a trail through the prairie. I saw a large buffalo there too. We're camping in another city park. It feels kind of funny sleeping right in the city like this.

Day #20 - Hogs Make Good Dogs.

I woke up around 5:30 this morning to bike with my new compadres.

I ate breakfast at a Hardee's with Mr. G then took off. It was awesome being able to talk and bike with other bikers.....I started talking to myself after a few days of biking alone. All the way through Kentucky Mr. G and I were chased by dogs, but today, our group of bikers were actually chased by a hog. We were biking down a state road heading toward Hartville, when we saw something big in the yard infront of us and the next thing we new it was chasing us. I am definitely seeing some crazy things on this trip. I biked 65 miles today, ending up in Marshview. We are staying at the McLaughlin's house tonight, a friend of the Gedelian'. Jeanie McLaughlin, the wife, actually biked across America the first year Adventure Cycling put out the maps in 1976.... And yes, they did have electicity back then. We've definitely had a great time visiting with them, and they served us an amazing supper. Tomorrow I'm planning on biking into Kansas :).

Mr. G - I spent the morning at Alley Springs, a site along the Ozark National Scenic Riverway.

This was the same place that Stephen rested at yesterday. I didn't see Stephen until 4:00 because we couldn't get cell reception. Stephen made it to Marshfield around 6:00 and we drove to my friend Jeannie' s house were we showered, got fed and are able to sleep in a real bed.

Day #19 - Ozark Mountains.

Took off at 6:30 this morning to beat the heat, and thank goodness I did because around 12 o'clock it was steaming. Missouri is a little bit humid, but I'm used to it living in Texas my whole life. Today I biked 85 miles to Houston, Missouri..... Which is in Texas County. So.. In a sense we are in Houston Texas :).
Today's ride was pretty tough, hot, and long. The whole time I was going up and down mountains. Here in Houston we met three more bikers. They are friends from college and wanted to bike across the country as graduates. Tomorrow I'm going to bike a little ways with them then continue on to my destination.
One thing I find pretty fascinating about the Ozarks are the rivers and springs here. I stopped at Alley Springs today, which, someone I met this morning informed me was one of the four prettiest springs in the country. I don't know if that's a fact or if he said it because that's what he thinks but it sure was amazing.

Tomorrow is going to be another 85 miles day, finishing off most of the Ozarks.

Mr. G - I drove to St. Louis after Stephen got started this morning. I had been to the arch twice before so I decided to go to the zoo. The zoo was huge and busy on a Saturday. It is well laid out with the cages for the animals looking very natural. I got there at 9:00 and finished around 2:00, so I didn't have time to go anywhere else. I made it to Houston just a few minutes before Stephen did.

Day #18 - State Number 4

I started biking this morning around 7:30. After biking over the Mississippi River I was in Missouri and for the first 9 miles it was flat. The last 91 miles was through part of the Ozark Mountains. It was hilly and pretty tough but I did it. It was my first day to ever bike 100 miles all by myself. Tomorrow I'm planning on biking another 100 miles and get as far as I can before the wedding. I didn't take any pictures today but I forgot to post this one yesterday. So. Here it is.

After Stephen left, I, Mr. G went to tour state parks in the area. There were two state parks in Illinois that were old French forts. One had a nice view of the Mississippi but the only part of the fort left was the foundation. The other fort was intact and was fairly large. They both had fancy French names that I can't remember. I also visited a historic home of an early Illinois statesman. All the parks were quiet with very few people. I met Stephen for lunch in Farmington, Missouri and then went to two state parks in Missouri. One was an old iron mine and the last was known for it's rock formations. I finally met Stephen in Centerville where we are camping on the courthouse lawn. I feel much better. I'm not stressed, my stomach isn't upset anymore and I am able to relax. I think I might get bored though. Tomorrow I may go to St Louis and go to the zoo and the arch.

Day #17 - I'll Take You For A Ride In My Big...... Red Truck.

Slept in late and ate breakfast at the motel. We were in no hurry to get up because we planned to take the bike to the bike shop which didn't open until 10. Mr. G went to check on renting a car but it wouldn't be ready until 4. So after eating breakfast we biked to the bike shop. The guy at the shop was very helpful, replaced my brakes and checked the gears making sure everything was still in order. By 12:30 I was on the road heading towards Missouri. Mr. G stayed in town and ran some errands until 4 o'clock when his rental car was ready, which turned out to be a red truck. [Mr. G got an upgrade]

My bike trail was basically flat today and a lot of the crop land in Illinois is flooded.

But. I got to see a bunch of wildlife which included, bullfrogs, blue herons, ducks, turtles and some egrets. The last 12 miles of my ride was along the Mississippi River, which marks as the border of Missouri and Illinois. I beat Mr. G to Chester, 51 miles from Carbondale, arriving around 6 o'clock. Chester Illinois is where Popeye was born :). When Mr. G got here in the truck I hopped in and we went for a spin. We saw Whimpy, Olive Oyle and Popeye.

We ate pizza then went to the local Dollar General and drove over the Mississippi River, which I'll be biking over tomorrow. We're staying at an FOE Lodge that provides a small cabin with bunks and showers for bikers, another free night. We met two bikers here, one from Sweden, and another from Northern Virginia, who are headed west also. They are both very friendly and have spent a whole day here resting. They met each other on the trail and are both pulling trailers behind their bikes.

Tomorrow I am planning on biking to Centerville Missouri, 100 miles away. Mr. G's goal is to take it easy, visit some historical sites and meet me at several points along the way.

Day #16 - Two Peddles Forward, One Peddle Back.

Today we woke up around 7 and went to check out the Cave in Rock.

There were actually a few movies filmed with the cave and it's pretty big. After that we went to town to ear breakfast. The town was completely quiet, so quiet that you could hear the electricity flowing through the wires above the road.. We faced hills all day long, going up and against winds at the same time is tough. But. We made it! 87 miles to a city called Carbondale. Tomorrow Mr. G is planning on renting a car for the next week while I ride my bike. It also looks like I am going to be able to finish the journey with another biker we met last week. We will both be heading to Oregon.

Day #15 - You've Been In Kentucky Too Long When You Know What 18-Wheelers Are Shipping By Smelling The Air As They Pass. [Chickens]

What a day! We woke around 6:30 at the fire station. Cold chicken left over from last night served as our breakfast. We were on the road by 8:15. It was already getting to be hot outside and was very windy. Again the wind was so bad, especially when trucks went by, it almost blew us off the road. The day started out looking nice but every time we would stop to rest people warned us that it was going to rain today. After biking 40 miles we stopped for lunch, and that's when the first storm hit.

The storm passed over pretty quickly and we were back on the track. 10 miles down the road a second storm hit. Wr pulled under some trees on the side of the road and waited it out. Once the storm let up we continued to bike and it rained lightly for about 10 miles but then hit heavy. In the worst part of the storm we saw an old general store on the side of the road and stood on the porch. We realized after we got onto the porch that the building was private property. After sitting on the porch for about 15 minutes the owner came out of the building and started talking to us. He was very friendly, insisted that we stay longer, told us the history of the area and about other bikers who have stopped there. He had a huge arrowhead collection and took our water bottles into the house and filled them up for us. He told us of a church in town that invites bikers to stay. So after the storm we biked the last 9 miles into town. We found the church but couldn't find anyone to show us where to sleep so we went across the street to eat. The lady that waited on us tried helping us out but she couldn't get a hold of the pastor either. it was around 7:30 and we still didn't have a place to stay so we biked another 12 miles in the setting sun trying to beat the darkness. We made it to the ferry before dark.

We were the only ones on the ferry and the ferrymen were extremely nice.

They told us where we could stay tonight. We made it to Cave in the Rock State Park and the host let us stay under a shelter away from the rain. He talked to us for a while about the history of the area and even provided us with bug spray. We ended up with a total of 83 miles of biking today.

The sunsets are nice too.

A side note from Mr. G:
Sorry to disappoint everyone, but after reaching our families in Kansas I have decided the trip will be over. The long biking days, day after day, and constant worry about many things has made me decide not to go on. We still have a week to go and we are going to go as far as we can, so we will keep on blogging until then. Stephen, on the other hand is going to try to continue on if his parents allow him to.

Day #14 - Century Ride.

The rain hadn't left us yet. In the middle of the night a storm came through but we stayed high and dry in our campsite. We were on the road by 7:15. This morning was perfect for biking, the temperature was comfortable, the road was fairly level and no wind. In the middle of the day we hit some hills that seemed to come one after another. The temperature rose and we began to battle the wind. But. We still managed to bike over 103 miles and arrive at our destination by 5:30. We are beast, but tired beasts. :)

[Imagine taking that across America]
We still haven't had any flats or major bike problems. All the roads in Kentucky go through small towns out in the country and Mr. G and I are getting tired of eating gas station food. Tonight we are staying at an awesome Fire Department in Utica Kentucky. There's AC, a washer and dryer [Boy did out clothes stink], and showers. We got to talking with the firefighters and really appreciate these facilities, everyone greets us with kindness. Tomorrow we are hoping to cross the Ohio River into Illinois, our 3rd state. We continue to run into more bikers, we passed four bikers heading east. We talked with two bikers who started in Oregon, they warned us of the Ozarks in Missouri. But. After biking the Appalachians, we're ready. So far our total mileage equals to 1000 miles.... Maybe that's why Mr. G is knocked out.

Day #12 & #13 - Tornados. Thunderstorms. And The Green Lantern.

Sorry for not posting yesterday, we fell asleep while typing out the blog. This one is for both days. Day #12. We woke up on our usually time to be alerted by the weather forecast. It was supposed to rain that whole day. We decided to ride a mile down the road to a Walmart to wait out the storm. Once we made it to Walmart it started pouring down rain so we sat and ate breakfast at Subway listening to the sound of water dropping. It wasn't until 10 o'clock when it slowed and we decided to go ahead bike 50 miles in the rain to a nearby town, Bardstown. It only rained on us for the first 10 miles and then the skies cleared. By 3 o'clock that evening we rode into Bardstown, soaking wet. We found a nice motel and went to see the Green Lantern in 3D, in celebration of Mr. G's 22nd birthday of course! It was a pretty good movie. We liked it. On the way back to the motel we stopped at Walmart again, this time to pick up brakes for my bike. Over the last fee days my brakes wore down to where they were almost useless. After getting back to the motel we attempted to write a blog post but we were distracted by The Lord of the Rings and eventually fell asleep. Day #13. We slept in this morning because it rained all night. I woke up to Mr. G watching the weather channel and it was reporting that a line of thunderstorms and tornados were coming through from the west. That was a little discouraging to wake up to. We could hear the thunder for several hours and the heavy part of the storm hit around 9 o'clock, lasting 30 minutes with very strong winds. Check out of the motel was at 11, so around 10:30, even though it was still raining, we packed up our stuff, headed out and found a nearby baptist church to attend. The people were very friendly and we enjoyed the service. We left the church at 12:30 and it had stopped raining. We ate a quick lunch at McDonalds and were on the road by 1. Even though the rain had stopped there were very strong winds against us and several times we were almost blown off the road. Even going down hill we could feel the wind pushing us back up. We saw signs of the storms by flooded fields and down branches all around, some in the road. The rivers were high, very muddy and full of debris. After biking 37 miles against the wind, we decided to stop in the city, Hodgenville. We are in Lincoln country. Yesterday we biked by Lincoln's Boyhood Home State Park, today we are near his birthplace.

The next campgrounds were 40 miles away and we didn't feel like we could make it before dark. The place we are camping at is a county park behind a middle school.

Our plan is to get up early and try to make up some time tomorrow by traveling 80 or 90 miles. We are hoping it doesn't rain again. We continue to appreciate the comments and prayers from home, it makes us feel more in touch. Sorry we never have time to reply to them but please keep them coming :).

Day #11- Rain. Hail. Lightening.

Today we got up and had breakfast with our new friends before leaving. By 8, we were on the road.

After a few big hills, the land got much flatter. The land now is rolling hills. It looks like the topography stays this way for quite awhile. We wanted to do a little farther today so we were aiming for 95 miles and the town of Harrodsburg, Kentucky. In the morning it rained a steady drizzle for several hours. It actually felt good. Then the sun came out and it started to get hot. We finished our second section of the map by lunch time and pulled out the next section. This part takes us through the rest of Kentucky and the southern tip of Illinois. The day ended in the last seven miles with a bad thunderstorm. We pulled into Harrodsburg after 97 miles ready to relax in a motel on Mr. G's 22 birthday (okay, I'm 52). Overall, today was a good day. We are celebrated Mr. G's birthday with some Pizza, DP and Star Wars. Tomorrow we aren't going to start biking until 8 again, because it rained tonight we're thinking it'll stay cooler longer tomorrow.

Day #10 - Saying Goodbye.

Today we woke up around 7 to a gigantic breakfast. David, the man who we stayed with, had set up all kinds of fruits and cereals and cake etc.

It was more then I could eat. It was our latest start yet, leaving at 9 o'clock. We biked our last few mountains today, Saying Goodbye to Appalachia. We didn't see much wildlife today because most of the time we were on busy roads. Today's roads have actually been the busiest so far and I feel like the truck drivers are the only drivers who know how to pass bikers up, everyone else was reckless. We're staying at a church in Booneville tonight. It's a nice place, we arrived around 5 after biking 64 miles. After we rested a while, Mr. G a long while, we cleaned our bikes and reorganized our packs. I finally have those little bike lights to bike at night. I feel complete. Tomorrow is going to be a longer day, we plan on biking 90 miles. We're camping with some of the same people we stayed with yesterday night, we like having made biking friends.

We are pretty beat so that's all for tonight, good night.
P.S. We forgot to say. Yesterday we biked 70 miles.

Day #9 - Biking In The Rain.

Off again. We decided not to get up so early now that it is cooler. So we woke up at 6:00 and were on the road by 7:15. We crossed into Kentucky in about three miles.

Kentucky is a lot different than Virginia. The roads are rougher, the homes not as nice, and dogs are chasing us.

We had five big hills that did me, Mr. G, in. Stephen had no problems. At the top of the fourth hill a thunderstorm hit. We road to the bottom of the hill and waited until the main part of the storm was over under the eaves of a gas station. The storm didn't seem to show signs of letting up so we road in the rain. Thankfully it did let up after awhile, but we still got the road spray. We finally made it to Hindman to the Knott County Historical Society. It is a bicyclists bed and breakfast. We were met by Dave with a sweet tea that had a fresh lemon and a mint leaf. We set up our tent, took showers and had our laundry done for us. We have also met up with the for bikers we met two days ago, a father and son biking team from New York and a biker from France on a recumbent. We were then treated to a huge baked sweet potato with whipped cream. Later he is going to give us ice cream.

Day #8 - Live a Little.

We slept in late today, got up at 7. Today we biked 26 miles, it wasn't too bad until the last 5 miles. We went up 3 big hills, one right after another. Eventually we made it to Breaks Interstate Park on the boarders of Virginia and Kentucky.

It's a pretty hilly park so we rented a golf cart for the day, it ended up being super fun to drive! We drove from overlook to overlook looking down into the Grand Canyon of the South.

Ate a marvelous lunch at the park's restaurant and then hiked a few trails. We saw a sign today saying beware of bears within the park, but Mr. G and I are hoping to see some.....just as long as they stay out of our food. Tomorrow we hope to make Hazard Kentucky, which is about 90 miles from where we sleep. So far everything is going our way. We're making great time, our gear is holding up and best of all we are eating plenty of food. The only thing bad thats really happened is a pole to my tent broke, but duct tape fixes all.
We forgot to mention, on Sunday after biking 55 miles we went to a small country church called Pioneer Baptist Church. It's service was from 11 - 12 and we really enjoyed it. They welcomed us in regardless of our appearance.

Day #6 & #7 - You Know You're In The Wilderness When You Don't Have Service.

The morning of June 12. We left the motel around 6:30. It was a hilly ride with a gradual increase in elevation of 500 feet. The country side in Virginia is beautiful. Everyday we bike past fields of corn and wheat, forest covered mountains, and pastures of cattle and sheep. There was one area where a sheep dog was siting right in the middle of a huge field of sheep. The coolest thing ever!

We stopped for lunch in Wytheville and while eating it rained and continued to rain lightly after we got back onto the road. Ever since then the temperature has been cool and chilly. We camped in a National Forest area which is why we didn't get to update the blog last night, there wasn't any cell phone reception. Yesterday we biked 80 miles. Today was another early day at 6 o'clock and we headed up another mountain. With a big breakfast at the top of the climb we were ready to tackle the next few peaks. We actually met some more bikers today and spent a few hours with them. They're all planning on biking to Oregon.

We ended up biking all the way to Council VA, today, which put us at a total of 80 miles. It was a very tough day, and we biked over three big mountains. Well that's over 550 miles in a week, which puts us ahead of schedule so tomorrow is an easy day. Tomorrow we are sleeping in.... Yeah! Then biking just 30 miles to Breaks VA, the border of Virginia and Kentucky. Hopefully we'll see the other bikers there! We enjoy reading everyone's comments, sorry we don't reply to them, we're usually beat by the time we write our blog and then go straight to bed. Thanks for the encouraging words!

Day #5 - Forever Young.

Well another day has gone by! This morning at 1:46 A.M. I turned 17 :). Though I didn't know it because I was asleep. Waking up at 5 o'clock again today, we started before the morning heat. The ride was gradually uphill with some long stretches that were downhill, but when we finished we ended up 2,000 feet higher then the start. Along the way we road over the 7th Natural Wonder of the World, raced a train and biked over wet roads.

Oh. Yeah. I saw this crazy cool sign too. Watch out for those cows!

Today we biked a total of 80 miles, which makes it the second furthest distance in a day. It felt a lot easier then the 100 miles a few days ago but it was still tough. We stopped in Christiansburg VA, and in celebration of my birthday are staying in our first motel. We ate supper at Pizza Inn and stuffed our selves with the buffet.

It was amazing. This marks the completion of our first map, a total of 380 miles in 5 days. Tomorrow we are planning on biking to Rural Retreat, which in only about 65 miles away. If we feel like biking more tomorrow we'll keep going. I think we'll make better time tomorrow, Mr. G finally shaved....it makes him more aerodynamic. 1/10 of the way done!

Day #4 - What Goes Up, Must Come Down.

Today we started biking at 6:30 heading straight for the Allegheny Mountains. When we were looking at the elevation changes on our map I was a little worried that I'd die..

But. We did it! We biked 32 miles up hill and topped the mountain at 3,200 ft.

It was actually easier than we thought it would be, but it was still hard. Going down the mountain we hit the top speed of 39 MPH. By the time we got to the bottom of the mountain we were starving because we couldn't find any stores along the way. It was around 2 o'clock when we ate lunch, we biked 7 miles into a bigger city and then ate a second lunch at Wendys'. We sat there for an hour in a half resting and planning what to do for the rest of the day. Mr. G and I were both exhausted so we decided to bike 8 more miles down the road and camp at a KOA. This leaves today's total distance at 70 miles, only 10 short of our goal :).

Tomorrow we are planning on biking 88 miles to Christiansburg.
We're both pretty tired so that's it for tonight's blog.
