Day #29 - I Can Ride My Bike With No Handlebars.

We were planning on waking up real early this morning.......but we accidentally slept in until 8. Which was alright because Dave and I really enjoyed staying at the Griffiths. It wasn't until 10:15 that we started biking. The first 60 miles had rolling hills and far spread cities. There was one city, Geneseo, that we biked through where it hurt our lungs to inhale the air. It was probably because of all the crop and industrial dusts. That lasted about 10 miles, and turned out to be the worst 10 miles yet. Today the temperature topped out at 103 degrees, the breeze didn't even help cool us down because it felt like it was straight from a heater. So around 3 we stopped and rested under a tree until 4, when it started cooling down. After that we biked another 45 miles to Great Bend, Kansas, where we are staying at a fire station. Along the last 45 miles we found this huge turtle crawling across the road and saved his life. I have never seen a turtle quite like it before.

It turned out that this turtle is Flash's [the little turtle I saved] great great grandfather, his name is Flash Sr. When we arrived to Great Bend, we biked by a bike shop to see if they were open. They weren't, but we ran into the owner, who had just come back from a 41 mile bike ride with some of his friends. He let us come in and buy what we needed. We talked with him a bit before leaving. He suggested we stay at the fire station, and we took his advice and are staying there tonight. Tomorrow morning we are planning to start around 6 a.m. and bike to Dighton, Kansas. Another 100 mile day.
