Day #30 - Almost A Whole Month.

We woke up at 6 a.m. today and left around 8 after having eaten breakfast. The first 65 miles was biked before 12. We had tail winds all day long, which allowed us to average 22 mph today. All the stories people have told us about Kansas being desolate are true. You could look for miles and miles in any direction and still see nothing, except for occasional cattle farms.

[I have been told that everyone wants to see pictures, but there really isn't a whole lot to see in this part of Kansas. No offense to anyone who lives here ;). We'll be getting into more scenic areas soon and I'll be taking plenty of pictures then.] Here's a picture of the road for y'all!

We did meet another biker going the opposite direction. I forgot his name but he's from Germany and started the trip in Denver, Colorado. He said he's only planning on biking the east half of the Trans America Bike Route. I didn't mention this before but Dave and I have been biking off of the Trans Am the past few days. Dave took the Katy Trail through Missouri when I went to my brother's wedding, so we just continued on the easiest path until we'd meet up with the Trans Am again. We are now back on the correct route, which is why we met that other biker. We ate pizza for lunch at 1 and then headed to the public library in Ness City, Kansas. We spent a few hours there to wait out the hot weather and for Dave to catch up on his blog: crazyguyonabike.com/doc/polackonabike
He can only blog when he has access to a computer so there may still be some days missing. While he was doing that I decided to head over to the city pool, which allows bikers to swim for free. It was refreshing. Around 5:30, after refilling our water, we biked toward Dighton, Kansas. Dighton is a really pleasant town. We made it here around 7:30, having biked a total of 100 miles. When we got here we celebrated with some soft serve ice-cream then jumped into another free pool. All of these little towns are so friendly towards bicyclists. We are camping out at the city park under a pavilion because it's supposed to storm tonight and a lot of tomorrow. I finally made a goal for this trip. Yes, to bike all the way across America, but to also bike a century ride before noon :). I think I can do it.... Eventually. Tomorrow is going to be another early morning to beat the heat. We are planning on biking into Colorado tomorrow, but we aren't sure what city we want to stop at yet.

I took this picture this morning and haven't seen trees on the side of the road since then. This part of Kansas is open and windy.

  1. Hey,
This posting a comment is a very sensitive task. I wrote a page full then lost it all. I basically said that Mrs. Craig will correct your spelling and grammar eventually. Forget her for now and keep writing ;)
You are doing wonderful. Please take pictures of yourself and Dave.
    Keep safe.
    Love you, mom
